    I don’t see what the big deal is with facebook and privacy, I assume that whenever I log onto the internet I have no privacy for any website. If I don’t want anyone to see it, I won’t put it online period.
    I don’t care if anyone knows my a/s/l old news.

    I also agree. This Facebook news isn’t new and from my P.O.V. I’m finding it’s mostly from paranoid radicals just wanting attention. Why would anyone put more information out than needed be? Yes, it is Facebook’s fault for not creating tighter policy for applications and what not, but it was the user’s decision in the first place to put out that certain information! =P

    I pre-ordered and sent along my receipt.

    Also, I’m on an iMac 24 running Leopard using Safari and when I come to your commandn.tv page, everything is pushed over to the right side with a large area blank on the left side and actually somewhat of the middle. This has happened every time I recall coming here.

    I must say, I’m really disappointed with your analysis on the whole Facebook privacy debacle, Ms. Mac. Basically what you’re arguing for is the social networking version of “buyer beware,” which places an undue burden (in my opinion) on everyday users and greatly privileges internet commercial interests (ie, advertisers and marketers). I don’t understand why you expect my grandma to pilfer through page after page of strategically obtuse administrative settings (with or without assistive services like “Open Book”) in order to protect her personal information. You call this “a user’s responsibility,” but I call it “willful deceit in service to the bottom line.”

    Lets put this into context. Credit card companies in the US have been pulling this same slimy, small print stuff for years in an effort to nickel-and-dime the public and maximize their profits. Facebook, apparently, is no different. Zuckerberg and company seek not to engage their users — a business model based on transparency, innovation, and above all respect for the consumer — but to trick them into unwittingly exposing themselves to unfamiliar corporations.

    This backdoor violation of user privacy represents a sincere threat for many people around the globe who have neither the technical expertise nor the economic/political clout to change the current system. They just want to keep up with their friend and family, not run a gauntlet every few months to keep their private data secure.

    So why is Command N suddenly siding with the duplicitous Goliath?! Very, very disappoint…

    The Spotlight segment (drumbeat?) - rude, offensive.

    I actually found myself putting my arm out and pushing back from the display thinking “Get out of my face you ignorant jerk”. Videoing with the camera 3 inches from the persons face to me is just too offensive to watch. I grabbed the slider and drug through it without watching anymore of what they were saying/doing.
    The technique feels like an unwanted and unwelcome invasion of personal space. It feels like deliberate rudeness.

    I think the Facebook stuff cuts both ways.

    You need to be careful about what you put online and who you trust with your information, but there is certainly some responsibility for sites that leverage your information to make clear what they’re doing and allow you to opt in explicitly or go elsewhere.

    It’s especially important if your data could be used in such a way as to extrapolate assumptions about you that may then be reflected in new information associated with your “account” that you never even provided (and which may be inaccurate) - more a future concern but still dangerous. At this point, it’s Facebook’s illusionist distraction confusion attitude towards making these things crystal clear that I find most annoying.

  20. It is refreshing to hear a smart opinion on the facebook privacy issue.

    Do people really expect privacy from a free service that monetizes on participant information. I simply assume that everything is public. There is no privacy, not even in an open source alternative. Somebody will watch it, read it , etc. It is disconcerting to see smart people assuming biased positions and using their influence in the Internet to bash someone they do not know on a personal level. Can even be called hypocrisy. Their (you all know who they are) biased opinions drive people away from their shows and to stop listening we do not have to delete an account. We just stop downloading the shows.

    It is obvious that facebook may not serve celebreties well because they have so many channels of communication and networks are just overwhelming to maintain for them. But that’s them. We find the service extremely valuable and understand that there is no privacy. We live in public on the Net.

    Not to beat a dead horse here, but Command N’s position on the Facebook privacy matter is most definitely not a “smart opinion.” It’s a two to three-minute segment that barely scratches the surface of very important and increasingly more complex issue: personal privacy and the public sphere. That would be fine, of course, if Ms. Mac hadn’t decided to blatantly support the interests of the most powerful players in the game, to the great disservice of those internet users, like myself, who simply do not have the socio-political and economic privilege to even participate in the discussion.

    Any why would Command N so clearly support corporate deceit and abuse of personal data? Could it be that our plucky Canadian hostess is merely trying to protect her own economic interests? I noticed that Ms. Mac has a book of “tips” for how one can best utilized social media to maximize one’s web traffic (ie, profits from ad revenue). Might that influence her decision to circle the wagons around poor, multi-millionaire Mark Zuckerberg and his monopolizing corporate machine?

    Oh, I’m shocked! Just shocked! Shocked that Kevin Rose (of Digg fame) did the exact same thing not too long ago via DiggNation. Shocked that all these many rich, connected media technocrats will deny user privacy and protect the shield. I’m shocked, I tell you!!

    If you’re looking for an intelligent deconstruction of Facebook’s unethical, self-serving, and chameleon-like privacy policy, I refer you to the writing of danah boyd, renowned media scholar and articulate critic of Zuckerberg’s ridiculous crusade for more ad dollars.
