-20! You guys are legends for staying outside. And cool interviews by Jeff and Rahaf, it was a big show this week.

I don’t have any doubts at all that my computer causes me to procrastinate. I’m useless at keeping my concentration on a single subject when I’m online. It was worse when I was at Uni and was at home working on assignments - I’d write half a paragraph then alt-tab and check my email or have a quick glance down the digg homepage or something. I’m just lucky that this seems to only affect me when I’m at home; I’m completely fine and easily keep my concentration at work.

    Hi everyone,

Our direct downloads will be online soon!

Thanks to Chris and Will in Toronto; Jeff, Chris, and Andrew in Halifax; David in Sweden, and Rahaf and the WEF team in Davos, Switzerland. This is truly an around the world episode!!!

    -Amber

  3. Jude Sturman says:

That’s the best approach to explaining the cost of cable vs internet TV I have seen. Gold star to Jeff! Your hands are warm Amber but I want to see you wearing a hat next time… ;)

  4. Great episode, Rahaf’s segment was very cool and Jeff’s interview was very interesting as well.

The end music was great, that tune always puts a smile on my face and then with the addition of the whole getting a ticket, priceless, sorry to see you getting a ticket Will.

Almost to much in this episode!

  5. Will Pate says:

Don’t worry, I didn’t get a ticket this time. There is a nice collection of old tickets in my office from previous shoots though ;)

  6. Steve Saylor says:

Jeff, I love the Podcamp segment! Awesome stuff! Makes me look even more forward to Podcamp Toronto! Great show as always!

@Rahaf, Great to see you on the show again, even if it was via Switzerland. Great interview, I never knew economics could be so interesting.

@Jeff, I know it’s cold in Halifax but as the interview with Andrew Baron goes to show, you can still have fun out of the house in Halifax in Winter and still stay warm, I guess Amber must be the only one in your family with ice running though her veins then. So are your parents back from sunny Florida yet? It was a really interesting interview, hope you can brave travelling around in the cold white north to bring us some more.

@Amber, So some where between 0 (ep165) and and -20 is when in finally gets cold enough for you to put a hat on. Glad you where able to get this episode filmed before the 15cm of snow landed on Toronto. With Internet TV, Leo and CaliLewis always live streaming, video podcasts plus Twitter and identi.ca on Twhirl to watch I do find it hard to fit all my work on even when doing 20 hour days and 4 monitors. I either need a bigger deck for another monitor or I’m going to have to learn now to disconnect myself from the web.

Quick question to anybody reading this, What did you do before video was available on the internet, or you got broadband?

It was only 2 years ago when I first went online fulltime but already I can’t remember what I used to do in my spare time apart from watching TV. Maybe, this would be a good question for Jeff’s new Decabled.com blog, so pop over to http://decabled.com/2009/01/28/hd-and-streaming and post your answers there, Thanks

@Will, So how did you talk your way out of getting a ticket? It looked as if they where only deciding who was going to write you the ticket, glad you got out of it though. All the hidden costs behind making commandN must really build up.

  8. Podcamp Halifax was a great experience and Andrew Baron is one of the smartest guys I’ve met in a long time (maybe besides Jeff. :) ).

That was an amazing interview. It’s amazing to see how far internet video has come in only just a few years.

  9. ambermac says:

    @Ryan - it’s a good thing you mentioned Jeff - LOL!

  10. Craig Moore says:

Big thanks to the CommandN crew for covering our first Podcamp. With over 160 at the door in -15 degree weather, it was a huge success for all.

Andrew Baron was extremely gracious and had a great time too. We have set the bar high for next time. He had many insightful things for us all working in this space (videos to be uploaded soon).

And me at 3:15 (woot!), too cool.

Thanks for all the great work,

  11. jeff says:

Ryan/Craig: Ah, you’re so sweet :-) . Thanks so much to both of you for getting such a great event together!

Liam/Jeffery: Glad you liked the interview!

SteveintheUK: Actually, I’d be happy to shoot outside but I’m normally shooting alone, so that’s not possible (I’m willing to bet I’m better equipped to deal with the cold than Amber naturally :-) ). And, yes, our folks are back form Florida - much to their chagrin, I expect!

Jude: I believe you’re referring to episode 165 but thanks nonetheless! :-)

    Thanks for watching, everyone!

    Jeff

  14. Cory Schop says:

That was a jam packed episode. PodCamp was great and a nice turnout. Some really neat sessions and Andrew gave a great presentation. Ryan and Craig, thanks for making it happen (as well as everyone else behind the scenes) !

  15. Philip Roy says:

Check out the “Benny Hillifier”….I just Benny Hill’d your behind the scenes video….

Bizarre. But clever I guess in the way it speeds up the video?

    Phil

  16. Steve Saylor says:

@Philip - Haha Benny Hillifier! That’s awesome! I loved it! Not the perfect video for the Benny Hill track, but it works! Thanks for doing/sharing that!

  17. Enjoyed the show. Strange to see you guys out in the cold, when we are in the middle of a heatwave!

  18. ambermac says:

@Graham - I know, wish we could send some cool air your way ;). Take care! -Amber

  19. David says:

How do you protect your camera equipment from the cold?

  20. ambermac says:

@David - I’ll leave Chris to answer that one!
    -Amber

  21. Tyler Clive says:

Hey Amber love the show and the work you do. I’m Thinking of starting my own little technology podcast just wondering if you could give me a few pointers as im new to it.

  22. Chris says:

@David, the cold wx is not a huge problem for the gear, true batteries don’t work as long and cords tend to get stiff and some plastics will get brittle in extreme temps. (I’ve shot in the Arctic without incident)

The real danger is when you bring the gear inside! The same moisture that fogs your lens will also create condensation on the inside of the camera, around the sensor and in the cradle where the tape head is, THAT is a HUGE problem. Humidity issues are much worse than extreme temperatures.

If your camera has any sort of protective raincoat or porta-brace around it you need to take it off as soon as you go inside, open up the carriage and leave it to warm up slowly to room temperature before using inside.

    Hope that helps

    -cd
