  2. Great episode. Loved especially Jeff’s breakdown of online TV vs. cable TV. The new media/old media blend in the next few years is going to freaking rock :)

  3. Liam K says:

Good episode. Don’t take this the wrong way guys, but I wish you could be out in the snow every single day of the year ;)

    – Liam in warm, sunny Perth

PS. mad props to Chris for the closing music selection :D

  4. great episode. love the locations. here in kamloops. ther is a new site to view and upload videos go to kamloopscity.tv

  5. jeff says:

DAVID: Glad you liked it (and, yes, it will rock :-) ).

LIAM: Nothing like a bed of snow for a nice, bright bounce light, is there?

IAN: Cool site! We have something more along the citizen journalism side (but video) like this for Halifax at Haligonia.ca .

    Thanks for watching!

    Jeff

  6. Paul says:

    Jeff,

Please take a look at the DTVPal DVR that uses free over-the-air broadcasts.

    http://www.dtvpal.com/

Beginning February 17, 2009, the US government is requiring that digital over-the-air broadcasts replace analog broadcasts. The DTVPal DVR is a digital-to-analog converter box with digital video recorder (DVR) capabilities. Using an on-screen program guide, you can select and record up to 150 hours of your favorite shows.

  7. Liam K says:

So Jeff, when are you going to leave the comfort of the indoors? That’s the only way the show will win that ‘toughest podcaster’ award ;)

    ~ Liam

  8. ambermac says:

Yes, we must get Jeff outside…it would be good to see him shivering in the snow ;)! LOL!

  9. Great episode, particularly the online vs cable breakdown.

I’m an avid consumer of video via iTunes, with over 2TB in my iTunes library at this point and two Apple TVs. Despite this, however, I’m still maintaining basic cable, since the biggest obstacle to going over to a completely online presence in the living room is the lack of readily available and easily accessible real-time content such as news and sports. I watch these types of things via cable, and just about everything else via iTunes.

Most of the streaming-to-living-room solutions that exist today are too complicated and unwieldy for the average user. I have the technical expertise to deal with them but simply don’t want to (they get in the way of simply enjoying my content), and anything more sophisticated than an Apple TV and Rogers Cable PVR doesn’t pass the wife-acceptance-factor (WAF) test.

Anyway, just thought I’d add my two cents. Keep up the great work.

  10. Jess.RR says:

happy new year, guys…good to see you’re still around; nice layout btw

  11. Colin Bowen says:

Everything is looking good. Music great too.

Always love the out-takes at the end. Looking forward the the Greek episode.

Hey Will! Don’t bump the bunny!

  12. Great episode. Love the wordpress.tv. I like the outside look that command N uses, much better than the stuffy studio. About the decabled segment. I watch almost no TV anymore. I don’t have the patience for the commercials. But there is no way I would download that much content to watch on my computer. Besides, there is just not that much ‘good’ content on TV. I do download a couple episodes to watch each week though (lets see, that’s about $4 dollars a week times 52 …. ugh, am I wasting my money?).

    Keep the great work up!

  13. I noticed in the last episode that the audio and video were not synced. I’m wondering if it is just my computer? I tried viewing it online and through iTunes. Normally I don’t have trouble viewing videos on my computer.

  14. Colin Bowen says:

    Just wondering…

Is there any chance of a ‘commandN Uncut’? Would love to see all the footage, even the stuff where you’re just reading notes or whatever. Love the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff between Leo’s shows, and the before and after footage on net@nite (via odtv.me).

I suppose your high production values and professionalism wouldn’t permit such an insight.

  15. ambermac says:

@Bruce - thanks so much, we love to get outside as much as possible!
@Thomas - I think this might have been your machine as we have not had that issue, hope you can figure it out!
@Colin - we’ll try more behind-the-scenes stuff, but to be honest we do one take only and that’s it. It is the Leo method ;)!
    -Amber

  16. Colin Bowen says:

    True professionals!

  17. Another great one…:)
    Very informative indeed.
    Great job!
    Tommy

  18. Steve Saylor says:

Not sure if my previous comment went through, but @Colin, expect a behind the scenes video of this episode soon!

  19. Steve Saylor says:

Ah okay so it did work. Okay cool.

@Colin - Yeah it is tough to get bloopers with these guys. I was there for ep 165, and they did the whole headLINES segment on the first take! But I did get some good footage to use for an upcoming video that I’m working on now.

Also, I hope to do more, if my schedule and Amber’s, Will’s, and Chris’s schedule can match up. :)

@Everyone - One last thing I would like to mention to everyone, we would love to see some video submissions of news stories you like, as well as your own reviews of webpicks that we haven’t done before. Upload them to whatever video sharing site you want, and we’ll put the best on the next show!

    Take care everyone!

  21. Don Popplow says:

Interesting item on Net TV, there must be less expensive sites for some of the programming

  22. Jason Miller says:

Amber, were you actually mad in the last 5 seconds? It looks like the camera made fun of your joke :P

  23. ambermac says:

HAHA - nope Jason, definitely not mad!

  24. SteveintheUK says:

As a fairly tech savy, qualified Mac Engineer and able to strip down and rebuild a car engine, weld up chassis, plus competent at diy, I’m a little embrassed to say that whenever I update my mobile/cell phone, the first thing I do is give it to my 15 year old niece to set up for me.

By the time I go to actually use it myself, all the contacts are already on it and its registered with my network. It costs me £5 to get her to do it, but it’s a lot quicker and easier than trying to do it myself.

@Amber, as for getting you mum a $20 phone that was easy to set up, my dad got a £5 cheapy pay-as-you-go phone from Asda/Walmart that was on offer at the time so even came with £5 of call credit. Now I have to get another one for my mum, without my dad finding out about it. She doesn’t want him calling her all the time when she ‘loses him’ on the day out.

Oh and sorry if there’s any spelling mistakes, but the preview button below isn’t working.

  25. Paul Jordan says:

great show this week…found something interesting for those who can’t seem to fit their tweet to 140 characters here comes twonvert …what this site does is transcribes your tweets into SMS shorthand to preserve some of that cherished update real estate ..check it out @ http://www.twonvert.com/

  26. Enjoyed the episode as always, you all rock!

Will, thanks for the webpick, I have been needing that sort of thing for awhile. I have been putting off learning all the stuff I need to learn to make the site better because I did not want to do a bunch of reading or trying to look it up in the forums. Really it was a way for me to put off being more serious with the blog because I am scared to put myself out there but I still feel the general idea of it is important so need to get past it and I think this will help, so big thanks! Oh, if you wanted to look at it I did get the names with the promo code and am about to renew it soon, it is the site my name links back to (still do not feel comfortable plugging my site and do not know when it is appropriate).

Anyway, thanks for the great shows everyone.

  27. Great episode, guys! High five to you too!
I have a link to share, maybe you have seen it before. Go to http://www.pixlr.com and try out this free online Photoshopish app, made by a Swedish guy namned Ola Sevandersson. I don´t know him, but love the site.

    Keep up!
    Take care!

  29. Hannah James says:

Loving the new site guys - nice work.

Enjoying Jeff’s segments. Since I moved from Australia to the US about 18 months ago, I never got around to getting cable and the local geography means only one station comes through with anything resembling clarity over the air.

First thing I did was buy a 24″ iMac which doubled as a TV in my tiny apartment and was more than suitable for watching DVDs. The arrival of Hulu.com made everything much better and I dont miss “regular” TV at all. Only 2 months ago did I finally go out and buy an LCD tv. I now hook-up my macbook using a mini-DVI to HDMI converter and run Boxee on it. It even streams the movies i brought with my on a HDD from home that are in VIDEO_TS format on a networked drive. My fiance does miss some of the shows that he cant find anywhere online, but for the most part it all works like a dream.

Keep up the great job - been an avid watcher since the beginning.

    -Hannah

  30. Will Pate says:

    Jeffrey Johnson, you’re quite welcome.

To all the folks that love the behind the scenes bloopers, I’m with you. I always sit on the edge of my seat each week to see if there was a blooper. I think they give a pretty good view of how much fun we have together shooting the show, even if we are fast! :)

  31. Cory Schop says:

Great show as always. I especially liked the part about the Best Job in the World. When will companies learn that they can’t fake things. It WILL bite them in the ass and people are too smart for that.

Looking forward to the upcoming PodCamp session!

  37. Jerseylink says:

Yours is not the only review of watching TV on the net that doesn’t mention that you can stream show from the networks own sites at no cost. Why is that?

  38. cd says:

    Testing again!

  39. ambermac says:

@Cory - looking forward to seeing the Tweepler interview you did with Jeff!

    Hi Amber, Will, and Jeff,

Just letting you know that here in Melbourne our temps for Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 are 41C, 42C, 40C, and 41C, in other words, our hottest heatwave in over 100 years. Worse still is the fact that we’ve had about two raindrops of rain this month, and we need heaps more desperately.

You might recall I wrote you about my wife’s visit to Toronto at this time last year — her dad had died and she was there helping her mother out. Well, this year she’s enjoying a real holiday here at home, although she wouldn’t mind having some of your weather, and nor would I!

Congratulations on the revamped site, and thanks for showing off some of the more recognisable elements of your lovely city in recent episodes.

And thanks to Jeff for his decabled segments — it’s starting to make a lot of sense, although ISP costs here make it difficult to implement internet-only TV. I guess it’s only a matter of time.

All the best from Melbourne, Australia!

  44. You guys did it. I love new site, Specially Facebook Connect thing.
We were discussing about this in our Chicago Wordpress Meetup that someone need to make a plugin of facebook connect for wordpress. It is awesome.
